I would like to comment on Eric Glazer's comments (Biscayne Times August 2021) regarding requirements for condo boards. I am a former board member of my condominium association, and I happily attended many Condo Craze presentations by Eric Glazer and received certifications to hold the elected position through these presentations.
As a board of directors is elected every year, it would be almost impossible for directors to have an intimate knowledge of the structures. Please also realize that directors aren't elected because of their expertise. They are elected by popularity. A desire to serve the community is not necessarily a requirement. Therefore, it has become apparent that the city, county and – maybe – state governments must take a larger interest in maintaining the safety of buildings. I am pleased that Miami- Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava has made inspections a priority.
Regarding reserves for repairs being waived, this has been an issue in South Florida since many directors and property managers have previously been convicted of stealing funds from these accounts. I believe it would benefit all condo associations if the state of Florida would create a secure depository for these funds. Therefore, owners would feel that these fees would be safe and only used for the projects or repairs determined to be necessary.
I thank Eric Glazer for his commitment to educating condo dwellers and associations about condo living and laws. I thank the Biscayne Times for publishing important issues that affect Miami-Dade County residents. I continue to pray for the 98 souls lost in the recent tragedy and for strength for their loved ones to endure this ordeal. One more thank you to all of the first responders (police, firefighters, medical, etc.) who answered the call to duty.
