The Aventura Arts & Cultural Center at 3385 NE 188 St. continues the cultural season in February with everything from nostalgic musical tributes to Flamenco and comedy. The following are the Biscayne Times’ top five pics to celebrate Valentine’s Day all month long.
“Piano Man: A Billy Joel Tribute”
Musician Mark Anthony joyously plays homage to Billy Joel, one of America’s most beloved music icons since releasing his first hit song, “Piano Man,” in 1973. Hailing from New York, like Joel himself, Anthony and his band recreate the look and sound of Joel to perfection, leaving audiences in a “New York State of Mind” long after they leave the concert. Feb. 11, 8 p.m.; $55-$65
“Abba Mania”
This two-hour concert recreates Abba’s sound perfectly and respectfully for longtime fans as well as a new generation
who never had the opportunity to see the original group live. “Abba Mania” delivers an incredible singalong performance of uplifting dance songs and timeless tunes such as “Dancing Queen,” “Waterloo,” “Mamma Mia,” “The Winner Takes It All,” “Super Trouper,” “Fernando,” “Take A Chance On Me” and many more. Feb. 17, 8 p.m.; $50-$55
“Splish Splash: The Music of Bobby Darin”
Las Vegas showman Ron Gartner celebrates the music, life and times of Bobby Darin with 23 great songs and a swinging band. The backstage stories of this entertainment phenomenon – from teen idol, singer-songwriter, movie star and nightclub performer – honor the legacy of the
swinging-est guy who ever put on a tux. Hits including “Mack The Knife,” “Splish Splash,” “Dream Lover,” “Beyond the Sea” and “Clementine” cover everything from Darin’s rock ‘n’ roll days to his legendary run at New York’s famed Copacabana. Feb. 18, 8 p.m.; $50-$55
“Siudy Flamenco: A Dos”
If you love flamenco, you’ll fall head over heels for the passion of Siudy Garrido. Garrido interprets flamenco numbers “a dos,” which means in a duet, creating mesmerizing dance solos accompanied by the simple yet intense original music of composer/guitarist Jose Luis de la Paz. The company ballet appears interspersed within and in between movements, taking the audience on a journey into the intimate emotions of the music over classic Flamenco rhythms known as seguidilla, alegrías and solea. The performance explores and presents the diversity of colors, sensations and emotions of a pure-rooted flamenco. Feb. 19 at 8 p.m. and Feb. 20 at 5 p.m.; $50-$55
“The Jersey Boyz Tour – Joe Gorga and Mike Marino”
One of the stars of “The Real Housewives of New Jersey,” real estate entrepreneur-turned-comedian Joe Gorga teams up with Mike Marino for a night of laughter. Marino is affectionately known to millions of his fans as “New Jersey’s Bad Boy” and has performed in every major comedy club, theater, casino and event center, from New York to Los Angeles and around the world.
