Miami City Ballet opens its new season Friday, Oct. 20, 2023, at the Adrienne Arsht Center’s Ziff Ballet Opera House, with a rich program of both classical ballet and modern dance dubbed “Fall Mix.”
The work MCB is famous for returns with “Serenade,” George Balanchine’s first original ballet created in the United States. Set to a lush score by his frequent musical inspiration Tchaikovsky, this cherished work is heralded for launching a new direction in classical ballet, one veering away from storytelling to impassioned plotless movement.
Joining the first program of the season is Twyla Tharp’s exhilarating exploration of movement “In the Upper Room.” This 1986 sensation is said to brilliantly intertwine boxing, tap dance, yoga, ballet and modern dance with intricate timing inherent in a commissioned score by Philip Glass.
Rounding out the program is the world premiere of “Sea Change,” choreographed by Miami native and former resident choreographer of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Jamar Roberts.
Following its Miami run, the program moves to the Broward Center in Fort Lauderdale for performances Oct. 28 and 29, followed by three more over two days at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach Nov. 4 and 5. Visit MiamiCityBallet.org for show times and tickets.
