A chapel to the Great Migration of millions of African Americans relocated from the South in the 19th century, Bethany Collins’s “The Litany” expresses a shared history of faith, loss, and transformation. Adorned with the poetics of Victorian-era English floriography and decorative arts, a centralized gallery entitled My destiny is in your hands, features a documentation of the states in which the artist’s family lived as represented by flocked floral motifs of each state’s official flower.

Meanings attributed by 19th century dictionaries to the wallpapered flowers include: “I am your captive” for Delaware’s official state flower, the peach blossom; and “I burn for you” for Louisiana’s iris, revealing an unseen violence.

At the heart of this exhibition, America: A Hymnal, notes 100 versions of the song My Country ’Tis of Thee by the Rev. Samuel F. Smith, inspired by the countless reinterpretations between the 18th and 20th centuries penned since its debut on July 4, 1831.

To experience this document is to cause a change in it, as singed pages cause notations to drop away. Aptly encircling the space on delicate red paper, Do you know them? (1896), represents a collection of classified ads placed by former slaves separated from family members by war, slavery, and emancipation. Published before the Civil War through the 1920s, the ads illustrate a shared identity of lost friends and family, yearned for by loved ones in the midst of cruel and segregated realities of the time. Through its own symbology and language, Collins’s “The Litany” challenges the ever evolving collective identity of America.
