Ritual brings to life a series of paintings which mine source material from New York-based artist Derek Fordjour’s personal nostalgia, art history, and dynamic social realities both past and present. Fordjour’s palette, imagery, and figures emerge from a confluence of oil paint, newspaper, and cardboard tiles. Modest in their medium, an innate gaiety emerges from the vibrant colors and thoughtful compositions of the illustrated spaces within these paintings. Fordjour imbues his subjects with a quiet self-awareness, casting them as jockeys and harlequins, navigating a world of social stratification. For the artist, these works convey the fortitude of African-American communities plagued by urban decay and economic abandonment, particularly in his hometown of Memphis. Furthermore, tactile surfaces mimic the threadbare second-hand clothing from his memories, sent off to be made anew in his parent’s native home of Ghana. Through the practice of painting, the artist explores ritual as it is empowered through habitual repetition -- representation, preparation, performance, and finally preservation -- and so the patterns repeat.
