Rising Miami painter Farley Aguilar presents his third solo exhibition at Spinello Projects, now at its new home in Little Haiti. Sourced from found antique photographs, Aguilar’s work draws from a rich history of painting, echoing strong undercurrents of Expressionism, Art Naïf, and Surrealism. Aguilar casts his characters into a neurosis reminiscent of James Ensor’s bleak, paranoid fever dreams: jagged hues depict disquieting scenes populated with carnivalesque figures; hollow stares peer at the viewer from faces that loom and distort into grotesque masks. Deeply influenced by the writings of Italo Calvino -- whose 1972 work Invisible Cities set a benchmark for contemporary Surrealist and Postmodern faux-narratives -- Aguilar’s characters are at once suspended in time and unwitting participants in a dismal future they have resolved to accept. One look at the artist’s haunting, massive paintings reveals a thoughtful, highly expressive albeit dystopic acuity, a perfect example of why he has become a new figurative force in Miami’s art scene.
