The turn of the 20th century ushered in a new way of understanding art, instigated largely by Dadaist pioneer and “father of the ready-made,” Marcel Duchamp. Brazenly claiming “an ordinary object [could be] elevated to the dignity of a work of art by the mere choice of an artist,” Duchamp created monumental waves in artistic and critical circles, many of which are still felt and examined today. Duchamp’s work challenged and democratized “high art,” laying the intellectual framework for conceptual art. Perhaps his most infamous work, Fountain, 1917, was submitted to the Society of Independent Artists for exhibition under the moniker of R. Mutt. A manifestation of pure absurdity, the “Bedfordshire” urinal ignited a heated conversation regarding authorship and inclusivity, which continues today. Representing some of R. Mutt’s most well-known contemporary proteges, “Some Aesthetic Decisions: A Centennial Celebration of Marcel Duchamp’s Fountain,” continues the discussion, examining value judgments based on taste, beauty, and aesthetics. Artists including Cory Arcangel, John Baldessari, Sophie Calle, Judy Fiskin, Sherrie Levine, Jeff Koons, Jorge Pardo, Francis Picabia, Julian Schnabel, Andy Warhol, and Kara Walker, among others, are included in this rich and absorbing survey.
