Celebrated sculptor Andrew Levitas makes his Miami debut with “Metalwork Playground” at Blueshift Project this month. For his exhibition, Levitas has crafted sleek, polished chrome forms mimicking playground structures, including seesaws, swing sets, and merry-go-rounds. While these objects are meant to evoke feelings of playfulness and recreation, they are further complicated by images that contemplate pressing contemporary concerns: dramatic shifts in politics and international economic strength, dependence on technology, and the rapid depletion of wilderness. These images are etched into the sculptures through his patented Metalwork Photography process, which involves the transfer of photographs onto custom transparencies that are then melted onto hand-etched metal sheets. The final products are polished with chrome, echoing our desire for perfection, immediacy, and our impatience in finding lasting resolutions in our quest for simplicity.
