Taking on weight and preparing for flight, site-specific installations at Locust Projects by artists Franky Cruz and Aaron T. Stephan explore the transformative powers of experience and labor as they relate to our perception of growth and utility of idealism. Responding to uncertainty in the nation’s shifting economic landscapes, the mass and gravity of the “American Dream” is tangible in Stephan’s Cement Houses and How to Build Them. Built by the artist with a concrete block-making device from the early 1900s, hundreds of blocks produce the façade of a home in the main gallery, a grounding symbol of American ambition. Acting as artist and entomologist, Franky Cruz’s Vivero documents through unexpected watercolors the shedding of another kind of home: butterflies as they emerge from the temporary shelter of their chrysalis. Unwitting collaborators, traces of umber and ochre secretions leave behind lyrical impressions onto watercolor paper placed below their cocoons, enclosed in a constructed vegetal environment in the project gallery. Once they have completed their metamorphosis, the butterflies are to be released back into nature, a symbol of beginnings and the mystery of creation.
