APix_1_Dish_10-16fter several months of relentless summer broil, the arrival of Florida’s restorative autumn season feels downright glorious. It’s not over quite yet -- after all, this is Miami, a city where flambé could easily be mistaken for lifestyle vernacular -- but before long, dining outdoors will no longer feel like self-inflicted punishment.

While I could ramble on for days about why fall is an exciting time of the year, I’ll cut to the chase: Everyone is rushing to open new restaurants before the arrival of Miami’s coolest winter months. September alone saw a glut of new openings. Best of all, there are a lot more on the way.

This month we’re seeing the arrival of several highly anticipated new restaurants, beginning with Michael Schwartz’s new Italian restaurant, Fi’lia (1300 S. Miami Ave., 305-533-1350) in the forthcoming SLS Brickell. Fi’lia, which translates to “daughter” (Schwartz has a penchant for naming restaurants after his children), will feature a roving Caesar salad cart, eclectic Italian comfort cuisine, and a wood-burning oven dishing out the finest pies this side of his acclaimed Harry’s Pizzeria (3918 N. Miami Ave., 786-275-4963).

Pix_2_Dish_10-16Next, fast forward to November, when Bazaar Mar (1300 S. Miami Ave.), José Andrés’ future seafood sensation, opens its doors in the same hotel. Also on the docket is a new Greek restaurant called Kiki on the River (450 NW N. River Dr.), opening in mid-October. This Mediterranean gem will feature ouzo-based cocktails and serve fresh, rustic Greek cuisine with plenty of fish dishes to justify its place on the Miami River.

If anyone deserves some serious cred in this city’s dining and development scene, it’s the esteemed Mark Soyka, whose eponymous Soyka (5556 NE 4th Ct., 305-759-3117) and Andiamo (5600 Biscayne Blvd., 305-762-5751) have survived the test of Miami time.

It’s been a cool 15 years since Soyka unveiled his last restaurant, but that’s about to change next month with the opening of Café Roval (5808 NE 4th Ct., 786-953-7850). Named in honor of the long shuttered but fondly remembered Café Roval in Tel Aviv, not much is known about the restaurant aside from the fact that the new chef is Nuno Grullon and it’s located in the quirky, coral rock Old Pump House, near Soyka’s expansive Upper Eastside compound, 55th Street Station. Color us curious. Café Roval is slated to open on November 1.

The winds of change are shaking things up for a popular neighborhood eatery: Buena Vista Deli (4590 NE 2nd Ave., 305-576-3945) was recently sold by longtime proprietors Cory Finot and Michelin-rated chef Claude Postel. Many fans of the restaurant consider Postel’s work with Buena Vista Deli and the nearby bistro to be a catalyst for elevating the neighborhood’s formerly underwhelming food scene. Meanwhile, the new owner, Corine Lefebvre, insists that Buena Vista Deli will continue to honor the pair’s legacy by providing fresh, delicious, and simple foods made with the best ingredients.

While this chapter comes to a close for the restaurateurs, a new one opens in North Miami with the recent unveiling of Finot and Postel’s Café Crème (750 NE 125th St.), a 210-seat French eatery that expands upon the groundwork laid by Buena Vista.

By now we’re all acquainted with the epicurean-approved Miami Spice, which came to a close at the end of September. Those who missed the boat this year have a chance for redemption with Culinary Community, a restaurant discount program directly benefiting Camillus House. From October 2 through November 23, several notable Miami restaurants will begin offering lunch for $15 and dinner for $25 Sunday through Thursday; these include Timo (17624 Collins Ave., 305-936-1008) in Sunny Isles Beach, Mina’s Mediterraneo (749 NE 79th St., 786-391-0300), and River Seafood & Oyster Bar (650 S. Miami Ave., 305-530-1915). Not only will you eat well, but you’ll sleep well, too, knowing that your meal helped feed those less fortunate.



As previously mentioned, this past September was an especially exciting moment for Miami’s food scene. Openings included the grand unveiling of prodigious chef Bradley Kilgore’s Brava by Brad Kilgore (1300 Biscayne Blvd., 305-949-6722) at the Adrienne Arsht Center; the ragin’ Viet-Cajun sensation Phuc Yea (7100 Biscayne Blvd., 305-602-3710) and its new brick-and-mortar location; and finally Paulie Gee’s (8001 Biscayne Blvd.), which dishes up Brooklyn-style pizza with attitude (and some seriously pun-tastic pizza names). These restaurants, all excellent in their own right, should keep you busy until the next batch open this month.
